Post #5 Spring Break Pt. 1

The past week has easily been the most productive seven days throughout the entire course of this project. Firstly, it was spring break and neither me nor my partner, Aayush, were traveling which allowed us to meet as often as we wanted. We took advantage of this opportunity and were with each other every single day at one point or another. Starting on Friday we got together, relaxed, and then got to DJing. Earlier in the week I had been individually messing with a trap song called "Ball So Hard" by Hucci. When I say "messing" I mean remixing, as in putting my own personal twist on the song itself. Specifically I utilized the looping function, raising the tempo, adjusting the EQ, and cue points. I was extremely eager to show Aayush what I had stumbled upon. He loved it! I taught him how to do what I had come up with and together we went about improving and refining it. We even integrated the use of a sample sound from another song. By the end of our work session that night (around 2am), we practically had it down, although it was still a bit rough to perform cleanly. We had a gig the very next night in Perkiomen Valley with about 40 kids of their freshman class. We planned on performing our remix live, but later decided against it as we wanted to wait until we had it down perfectly. Regardless, the party was a huge success. The introduction time as people were walking in and acquainting themselves with each other was relatively short and the dancing started within about just 10 minutes! Nearly everyone joined in and was dancing seemingly nonstop until the very end of the party. Several people approached us and gave compliments, some even saying that it was the best party they had ever been to because of our DJing. Some tips and instruction I learned through my research really came in handy and actually worked when we applied the skills live. Additionally, several people also asked for our information because they were interested in hiring us as well! There is no better feeling than doing what you love, watching other people enjoy it as much as you do, and then having them contacting you later on to do it again and again.

Throughout the week we met up everyday, as I mentioned earlier, and practiced our skills. However we soon needed to begin seriously thinking about our TED talk and what exactly we were going to do to show our passion, process, and purpose.

How hard could it possibly be?

About Me

My partner and I have always been interested in DJing as a hobby, but in order to accomplish this task we must first obtain all the required software and equipment to do so. However, simply buying equipment and becoming DJs is easier said than done, therefore we must break down the DJing process into manageable, and achievable steps to become a DJ. The phases we have broken the process down to is learning how to use the equipment and software, control the volume, transitioning from one song to the next, understanding the audience, and appropriately using effects. At the end of the process we will display the DJing skills we have acquired through our extensive research and practice by performing a one to two minute live mix.
